What is Information Literacy?

Savannah, GA (USA), September 2008 - "Information Literacy" is defined as the ability to know when there is a need for information and to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. The topic will form the focus of the discussion at the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy, taking place on October 3 and 4 at the Coastal Georgia Center, Savannah, GA, USA.




The Conference is hosted by Georgia Southern University's Department of Writing and Linguistics of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Education, the Continuing Education Center, and the Zach S. Henderson Library. The program will address topics such as:

  • Defining information literacy in a digital age.
  • Effective means of developing information-literacy skills in learners.
  • Partnerships between librarians and classroom teachers to teach students research
    skills.
  • Information literacy across the disciplines.
  • Assessment of information-literacy initiatives.
  • Intellectual property, copyright, and plagiarism in the digital age.
