Training Simulation for Human-Error Reduction

Las Vegas, NV (USA), February 2015 - Practicing Perfection Institute, Inc. (PPI) and L-3 MAPPS have announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to integrate leading-edge simulation with next-level human performance and human-error-reduction techniques for the power-generation sector. This agreement opens the door for the development and integration of software tools and scenarios that will modify behaviors on a scale and at an effectiveness level never before achievable.

"We've already seen reductions in human-error rates of up to 87.5 percent using the approach known as Practicing Perfection®," offered Tim Autrey, PPI Founder and CEO. "The integration of associated fundamentals into next-generation training simulations offers unparalleled opportunities to achieve repeatable, and most important, sustainable behavior change."

Simulators have been used for more than four decades by the nuclear-power-generation and commercial aviation industries, helping to achieve exponential improvements in safety, operations, and maintenance performance. As technology continues to make simulators more flexible, available, and affordable, additional sectors are now pursuing opportunities for their use. The incorporation of behavioral psychology and associated human-error reduction tools into simulator-training scenarios is dramatically multiplying their applicability and effectiveness.

"At L-3 MAPPS, we are continually seeking to advance the technology, application, and effectiveness of our simulators," added Michael Chatlani, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for L-3 MAPPS Power Systems and Simulation. "By working with PPI, we look forward to providing our customers with an entirely new mechanism for directly targeting behaviors to reduce human error."

The cooperative efforts between PPI and L-3 MAPPS will target high-risk-scenario simulations, where the predetermined consequences of human error can be catastrophic, as well as simulations of routine operations, where familiarity tends to lead to complacency and lack of engagement. Behavioral triggers will be combined with high-fidelity simulation to provide real-time interactive learning and evaluation opportunities for trainees.

A team of uncompromising champions of human possibility, the Practicing Perfection Institute, Inc. offers culture analysis, training, consulting, and implementation-assistance services for organizations seeking to improve safety culture, lower the incidence of human error, and achieve high reliability. With headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, PPI has affiliate organizations in Canada, Belgium, and South Africa.

L-3 MAPPS has over thirty years of experience in pioneering technological advances in the marine-automation field and over forty years of experience in delivering high-fidelity power-plant simulation to leading utilities worldwide. In addition, the company has more than four decades of expertise in supplying plant computer systems for Canadian heavy-water reactors. L-3 MAPPS also provides targeted controls and simulation solutions to the space sector.
