Workshop on Open Source and Standardization

Duisburg/Essen (GER), June 2007 - At the beginning of November 2007, the first international workshop on "The Trends and the Future of Open Source, Open Content and Standardization" will take place in Japan. This new annual meeting focusing on Open Source and Standardization in eLearning will be launched as part of the well-established "International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE)", which invites participants to its fifteenth edition, convening in Hiroshima from the 5th until the 9th of November.

"This Workshop is not intended to be a one-time event but to become a continuous collaborative initiative in the future ICCE conference series", points out Prof. Kiyoshi Nakabayashi from the Japanese National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME), the initiator of the new annual workshop. An international program committee that acts as an advisory board has been established to underline and guarantee the long-term vision.

"The new workshop evidences once again how important standardization in eLearning is considered internationally and how strongly it is supported", explained Christian Stracke, member of the program committee and convener in the international ISO standardization committee for eLearning, SC36.

The workshop deals with all topics on Open Source, Open Content, and Standardization in eLearning. Next to the focus on Open Standards, the demand for a standardized eLearning framework is one of the main topics. In addition, the program is also covering discussions of Open Content and of International Alliances for Open Source, Open Standards, and federated repositories. Proposals for further contributions are still welcome: The "Call for Paper" of the workshop is open until July 20th, 2007.
